Headley, Follies. A National Trust Guide.

Headley, Gwyn/ Meulenkamp, Wim. Follies. A National Trust Guide. London, Jonothan Cape, 1986. 21.2cm x 14.2cm. xxviii, 564 pages. With photograph illustrations throughout. Original Hardcover with original illustrated dustjacket. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear.

Includes for example the following chapters: Cornwall/ The West Country/ Devon/ Wessex/ Wales and the Welsh Borders/ London, the Thames Valley and the Chilterns/ Buckinghamshire/ Hertfordshire/ The Cambridgeshire/ Essex/ Lincolnshire/ North-East England/ North-West England/ Eastern Counties/ Scotland/ Highland/ Lothina/ Strathclyde/ Tayside/ Fife/ Grampian etc.

In their witty and entertaining guide to the follies of Britain (those of Ulster and the Irish Republic may be added to a later edition), these intrepid authors offer not so much an academic history of avante-garde buildings as a celebration of creative architecture. Not all these follies are under the protection of the National Trust. Some stand in imposing, grim or comic prominence in absurdly exposed positions; others lie secluded in bushes like wounded animals, or require the observer to undertake a daunting cross-country obstacle course and to run the gauntlet of fierce dogs, or men with guns. This book is divided into the main National Trust areas and then county by county. Some 150 of the buildings are also illustrated in colour or black and white photographs. Dates are given and architect’s patrons where they are known. A gazetteer at the end provides references for locating the buildings, which are best approached by car and thereafter on foot, by boat or by hang-glider.
